Fluorescein Angiography in Sarasota & Manatee County, FL
Fluorescein angiography is a series of real-time photographs of fluorescein dye as it circulates through the blood vessels in your retina. This test can highlight abnormalities in the blood vessels of the retina, which can occur in several retinal diseases, including age related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vein occlusion.
This angiography requires injection of fluorescein dye into an arm vein. The dye is non-toxic, non-iodine, and eliminated by the kidneys within 24 hours. Risks of the procedure are minimal, but include transient nausea, seepage of the dye around the injection site, and orange discoloration of urine. Rarely, patients have an allergic reaction to the dye, with less than one in one-hundred thousand experiencing signs of anaphylaxis.
This procedure is performed in the retina clinic after your eyes have been dilated and takes approximately fifteen minutes to complete.
