Conditions We Treat in Sarasota
Macular Degeneration
A chronic condition affecting the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. Macular Degeneration primarily occurs in two forms, Dry and Wet, leading to vision loss over time. Treatment options may include lifestyle changes, vitamin supplements, and advanced therapies like anti-VEGF injections to slow progression and preserve vision.
Diabetic Retinopathy
A diabetes complication that affects the eyes, caused by damage to the blood vessels of the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye (retina). It can lead to blindness if untreated. Management includes strict control of blood sugar, blood pressure, lipid abnormalities, and specific treatments such as laser therapy, injections of corticosteroids or anti-VEGF agents, and vitrectomy surgery.
Floaters and Flashes
Floaters are tiny specks or “cobwebs” that drift through your field of vision, while flashes are bursts or streaks of light that are not actually there. Often benign, they can sometimes indicate more serious retinal conditions like detachment. Evaluation is essential to rule out retinal tears or detachment.
Retinal Detachment/Tear
A serious condition where the retina pulls away from its normal position. It can cause permanent vision loss if not treated promptly. Treatment may involve laser surgery, cryopexy (freezing), or scleral buckling procedures to reattach the retina.
Dislocated Intraocular Lens
This condition occurs when an intraocular lens implant (used in cataract surgery) moves from its original position, potentially leading to vision problems. Treatment options include repositioning the lens, exchanging it, or additional corrective measures.

Macular Edema
Characterized by swelling or thickening of the macula due to fluid accumulation, leading to distorted vision. It’s often associated with diabetic retinopathy, RVO, and other retinal conditions. Treatment may include anti-VEGF injections, corticosteroids, and laser therapy.
Macular Holes
Small breaks in the macula that can cause blurred and distorted central vision. They may develop spontaneously or as a result of trauma. Surgical intervention, typically a vitrectomy, is the main treatment to help improve vision.
Macular Pucker / Epiretinal Membrane (ERM)
A condition where a thin, cellophane-like membrane forms over the macula, causing vision to be blurred and distorted. Treatment, when necessary, involves vitrectomy surgery to peel away the membrane and improve visual clarity.
Retinal Vein Occlusion (RVO)
Blockage of the small veins that carry blood away from the retina, leading to vision loss. Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying cause and may include laser therapy, injections of anti-VEGF drugs, or corticosteroids to reduce swelling and improve vision.
Retinal Artery Occlusion (RAO)
A blockage in the arteries that supply blood to the retina, leading to sudden, painless vision loss. Immediate evaluation is crucial, as treatments are most effective when implemented promptly. Management aims at improving blood flow to the affected area and treating any underlying conditions.
Surgical Treatments
Intravitreal Eye Injections
A treatment method involving the injection of medication directly into the vitreous, near the retina at the back of the eye. This procedure is commonly used to treat various retinal diseases, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vein occlusion, by delivering medication directly to the affected area.
Lensectomy
A surgical procedure to remove the eye’s natural lens when it is damaged, dislocated, or needs to be replaced due to a cataract. This procedure is often combined with the implantation of an intraocular lens (IOL) to restore vision.

Vitrectomy
A surgical procedure that removes the vitreous, the clear gel that fills the middle of the eye. Removing the gel gives your surgeon direct access to the retina to repair conditions such as retinal detachment, macular holes, macular pucker, and dislocated lenses. Most vitrectomies are performed as outpatient procedures, and your surgeon will explain exactly what to expect before and after surgery.
Scleral Buckle
A surgical procedure used to repair certain types of retinal detachment. Your surgeon places a soft silicone band around the outside of the eye that gently supports the wall of the eye and helps the retina reattach. The band stays in place permanently and also helps protect the eye against future detachments.
Pneumatic Retinopexy
A minimally invasive procedure used to repair certain types of retinal detachments. It involves injecting a gas bubble into the vitreous cavity of the eye, which then presses against the retina, helping to close any tears and reattach the retina.
Scleral Fixation of Intraocular Lens Implant
A technique for securing an intraocular lens (IOL) to the sclera (the white part of the eye) when traditional lens implantation methods are not feasible. This is often required in cases where the natural lens capsule is insufficient to support the IOL, such as after a cataract surgery complication or in cases of lens dislocation.

Dilated Retinal Exam
A dilated retinal exam is a comprehensive evaluation of the retina, macula, optic nerve, and blood vessels at the back of the eye. Eye drops are used to widen the pupils, allowing your retina specialist to examine the back of the eye in detail and detect conditions such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal tears, often before they cause symptoms.
Retinal Laser
A therapeutic procedure that uses focused beams of light to treat various retinal conditions, such as diabetic retinopathy, retinal tears, and retinal vein occlusions. By applying laser energy, this treatment aims to seal retinal tears, reduce abnormal blood vessel growth, and prevent further vision loss.
