Reviews From Our Tamiami Office

Moved to Sarasota. Needed to find a doctor for some serious concerns with my eyes regarding pressure.. Scheduled an appointment and they immediately got me in that day which was concerning because usually doctor s or at least good ones take forever to get into.I was completely wrong. They did a thorough review of all my history, questions and then they did all the tests necessary to rule out any major issues.I've been to doctors in the past and did not receive the degree of Care and test that they perform to rule out all issues.Once they perform their test and concluded that I was okay. They took the time to answer all of my questions in great detail.I'm so happy to have found a firm close by that I can take my family to.Thank you!

We went to another retina specialist and found Dr. Shane’s office to be so much more professional, in every way! The wait time was minimal, the staff was very clean and knowledgeable, and experience, for my mother was excellent… I would highly recommend this retina office over some of the other ones in Sarasota

I first met Dr. Shane about 3 yrs ago. I started seeing flashes of light in my left eye. His well trained staff got me in immediately. I went to his Sarasota office. He determined that my retina had torn. He had me follow him to his University office where he performed laser surgery to repair the tear. Two years later, my right retina tore. I knew exactly where to go. This year (The Year of Covid) I was experiencing visual distortion in my right eye. There was a misunderstanding regarding whether or not Dr. Shane was on my insurance plan. I saw three other ophthalmologists in Sarasota. I was told I had a macular pucker and required surgery. One of the providers, the MOST EXPENSIVE, stated that I needed to have cataract surgery first. When I asked why they believed cataract surgery was necessary on an eye with 20/25 vision, I was told...well we just won't do that eye. (? Red Flag) I decided to pay out of pocket to have Dr. Shane evaluate my eye. His staff contacted me and informed me that he was on my plan. I was able to confirm this with my insurance company. Dr. Shane agreed that I did need surgery for the macular pucker; however, cataract surgery was not necessary at this time. Needless to say, my vision is improving daily. No more distortion. This is an extremely long post, but our eyes deserve the BEST! No second chances here for screw ups. Dr. Shane and his staff are the absolute, hands down, best in the Sarasota/Bradenton area. I can't say enough about his knowledge, concern and love for his profession. This is obvious when you meet his staff, at both locations too. Everyone there makes you feel like family.... like they've know you forever. It doesn't get any better.
I was in the Bradenton area very far from NH where my home state is when I experienced an issue with one of my eyes. My husband did some research and found Retina Care Consultants and called after hours into an answering service. I received a call back from Trevor (technician/assistant to Dr. Shane?) shortly after he and Dr. Shane consulted and he got me in ASAP and made me feel comfortable from the get-go. I was impressed with the entire staff as they were friendly, professional and caring. From Colleen in the front to Kris who did my intake, then with Trevor and then Dr. Shane who was thorough and informative as well as concerned and caring! I am so appreciative that they got me in and took care of me, an “out of stater” so well. I highly recommend!!! Thanks again! Amie Hayward.

I was having some symptoms of a floater in my eye and googled "eye floaters" in the Sarasota, FL area. Retina Care Consultants came up as one of the results. It led me to view their website which is so well put together and informative. And both of the doctors' credentials were very impressive! I made an appt for the next day and in the interim, Dr. Thomas Shane called me to introduce himself and to answer any questions I had. NO doctor has ever done that!! My appt went well, the staff couldn't have been nicer.....from the receptionist to the other office staff to the tech to the doc. Total class and professionalism! I highly recommend Retina Care Consultants and Dr. Thomas Shane. Good luck!

In Florida on vacation when I had an issue with my eye. The staff got me right in to see the doctor. He treated the condition and suggested some follow up tests for when I return to my doctor at home. Staff was very courteous.
Dr. Shane was the only retinal specialist we were able to find who was open on a Friday afternoon when my wife had a scare with her vision. He was personable and put her at ease. When I needed a retinal specialist here in Sarasota, I told my retinal specialist in Ohio about my wife's experience, and she told me she knew Dr. Shane personally and highly endorsed him to follow up on her care for me down here in Sarasota! I was totally impressed with him and how kind and efficient his staff is, and I highly recommend him.
I had a dislocated 25-year-old intraocular lens, the implant fell from its normal position in the front of the eye backwards towards the retina and was floating around in my eye, pretty scary! My regular doctor at Coastal Eye in Bradenton had predicted the occurrence and referred me to ophthalmologist Dr. Thomas Shane when it finally happened, as he is one of the very few doctors in Florida who can do such surgeries. Quick action was called for and Dr. Shane and his staff didn't waste any time. We found everyone on his staff and the surgery center to be very professional and compassionate. The surgery and recovery went very well. The ocular bag had disintegrated and Dr. Shane had to suture the new IOL in place, I think Dr. Shane is a magician! I can actually see better out of the affected eye now, then before the dislocation. My wife and I both feel that Dr. Shane and his staff are amazing. I have dealt with eye problems for over 30 years, with multiple doctors and surgeries, and this one of the better experiences I have ever had. I highly recommend Dr. Shane and his staff.

My wife experienced sudden onset floaters and flashes in her eye recently, which represented an urgent need! Multiple searches of the internet for the best Retina specialist in Sarasota, consistently guided us to Dr Thomas Shane. His staff was very efficient and competent, ensuring that my wife was seen by him the next day. Dr. Shane performed a thorough exam and clearly and succinctly explained what was happening in her eye and how it could be treated. We felt instantly comforted knowing that she was in good hands. The treatment went very smoothly due to Dr Shane’s expertise. Everyone was very professional and caring. It was a very scary time, but we were so grateful to have received such excellent and compassionate care from Dr Shane and his staff.

I had my 1 year follow appointment with Dr. Shane and I cannot thank him or his staff enough for the professional care I received. I'm happy to report my eye is perfect. The entire staff is friendly, professional in every way and I have NEVER waited more than 5 minutes in the waiting room to be taken back to a room for my exam. I have referred Dr. Thomas Shane on several occasions and everyone that I referred was extremely happy. He is the BEST Retina Surgeon in Sarasota County by far. Sincerely, Debbie Moore

Services at our South Tamiami / Bee Ridge Ophthalmology Clinic

At our ophthalmology clinic near the intersection of South Tamiami & Bee Ridge road, we offer a comprehensive suite of retinal services and procedures, each designed to meet the diverse needs of our patients with precision and care.

Conditions We Treat in Sarasota

A chronic condition affecting the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. Macular Degeneration primarily occurs in two forms, Dry and Wet, leading to vision loss over time. Treatment options may include lifestyle changes, vitamin supplements, and advanced therapies like anti-VEGF injections to slow progression and preserve vision.

A diabetes complication that affects the eyes, caused by damage to the blood vessels of the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye (retina). It can lead to blindness if untreated. Management includes strict control of blood sugar, blood pressure, lipid abnormalities, and specific treatments such as laser therapy, injections of corticosteroids or anti-VEGF agents, and vitrectomy surgery.

Learn more about diabetic retinopathy

Floaters are tiny specks or “cobwebs” that drift through your field of vision, while flashes are bursts or streaks of light that are not actually there. Often benign, they can sometimes indicate more serious retinal conditions like detachment. Evaluation is essential to rule out retinal tears or detachment.

Learn more about floaters and flashes

A serious condition where the retina pulls away from its normal position. It can cause permanent vision loss if not treated promptly. Treatment may involve laser surgery, cryopexy (freezing), or scleral buckling procedures to reattach the retina.

Learn more about retinal detachment

This condition occurs when an intraocular lens implant (used in cataract surgery) moves from its original position, potentially leading to vision problems. Treatment options include repositioning the lens, exchanging it, or additional corrective measures.

Learn more about dislocated Intraocular lens

Characterized by swelling or thickening of the macula due to fluid accumulation, leading to distorted vision. It’s often associated with diabetic retinopathy, RVO, and other retinal conditions. Treatment may include anti-VEGF injections, corticosteroids, and laser therapy.

Learn more about macular edema

Small breaks in the macula that can cause blurred and distorted central vision. They may develop spontaneously or as a result of trauma. Surgical intervention, typically a vitrectomy, is the main treatment to help improve vision.

Learn more about macular holes

A condition where a thin, cellophane-like membrane forms over the macula, causing vision to be blurred and distorted. Treatment, when necessary, involves vitrectomy surgery to peel away the membrane and improve visual clarity.

Learn more about macular pucker

Blockage of the small veins that carry blood away from the retina, leading to vision loss. Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying cause and may include laser therapy, injections of anti-VEGF drugs, or corticosteroids to reduce swelling and improve vision.

Learn more about retinal vein occlusion

A blockage in the arteries that supply blood to the retina, leading to sudden, painless vision loss. Immediate evaluation is crucial, as treatments are most effective when implemented promptly. Management aims at improving blood flow to the affected area and treating any underlying conditions.

Surgical Treatments

A treatment method involving the injection of medication directly into the vitreous, near the retina at the back of the eye. This procedure is commonly used to treat various retinal diseases, including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vein occlusion, by delivering medication directly to the affected area.

A surgical procedure to remove the eye’s natural lens when it is damaged, dislocated, or needs to be replaced due to a cataract. This procedure is often combined with the implantation of an intraocular lens (IOL) to restore vision.

Learn more about lensectomy

A surgery to remove the vitreous gel from the eye, which can improve access to the retina for repairing retinal detachments, removing scar tissue, and treating other retinal conditions. This procedure is critical for restoring and preserving vision in patients with complex retinal diseases.

Learn more about vitrectomy surgery

A surgical technique for repairing retinal detachments. It involves placing a flexible band around the eye to gently push the sclera toward the detached retina, helping to reattach the retina to the underlying tissue.

Learn more about scleral buckle

A minimally invasive procedure used to repair certain types of retinal detachments. It involves injecting a gas bubble into the vitreous cavity of the eye, which then presses against the retina, helping to close any tears and reattach the retina.

A technique for securing an intraocular lens (IOL) to the sclera (the white part of the eye) when traditional lens implantation methods are not feasible. This is often required in cases where the natural lens capsule is insufficient to support the IOL, such as after a cataract surgery complication or in cases of lens dislocation.

Advanced Therapies and Diagnostic Services

A revolutionary approach to treating the dry form of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), potentially slowing the progression of the disease. Syfovre represents a new class of treatment aimed at preserving vision for individuals with this previously untreatable condition.

Learn more about Syfovre for dry AMD

An innovative device designed for the treatment of wet age-related macular degeneration. The implant provides continuous delivery of medication to the eye, reducing the need for frequent intravitreal injections and offering a new level of convenience and efficacy in managing this chronic condition.

Learn more about Susvimo

A therapeutic procedure that uses focused beams of light to treat various retinal conditions, such as diabetic retinopathy, retinal tears, and retinal vein occlusions. By applying laser energy, this treatment aims to seal retinal tears, reduce abnormal blood vessel growth, and prevent further vision loss.

Learn more about our retinal laser

Fluorescein angiography is a diagnostic procedure that uses a special dye to illuminate the blood vessels in the retina. This allows for the detailed imaging of retinal circulation, helping to diagnose and guide the treatment of retinal diseases.
