2021 Florida Pre-Med Scholarship Program Winners
The Shane Retina Florida Pre-Med Scholarship Program continued in 2021 to recognize outstanding students pursuing
careers in medicine. Below, we highlight the recipients of the 2021 awards and their thoughtful, educational
infographic submissions focused on retinal and vision health.
2021 Florida Pre-Med Scholarship Program Winner | Hannah Dickinson

Infographic Topic: Undertreatment of Macular Degeneration
Hannah Dickinson is an incoming freshman at the University of Florida, majoring in Biology with a minor in French.
She is a National Merit Scholarship Finalist and served as president and founder of her high school’s Red Cross
Club during its active years.
Hannah plans to attend medical school after completing her undergraduate studies and aspires to become an
ophthalmologist. Her interest in macular degeneration grew after her grandfather was diagnosed with the condition,
motivating her to learn more about prevention and future treatment options. She is grateful to Shane Retina for
supporting her educational goals.

Infographic Topic: Floaters: Everything You Need to Know
Danielle DuPuis is a senior in the Honors College at the University of Florida, studying Microbiology and Cell
Sciences with a minor in Spanish and a certificate in Music in Medicine. She is the former president of the UF
Undergraduate American Medical Women’s Association and the founder of UF Music Meets Medicine.
A musician for more than 14 years, Danielle is passionate about the role of the arts in healthcare and plans to
integrate these humanistic elements into her future medical practice. After medical school, she hopes to pursue a
career in Ophthalmology or Dermatology and expressed sincere appreciation for Shane Retina’s continued support.

Infographic Topic: Macular Degeneration: What Is It?
Lavanya Durai is a senior at the University of Florida majoring in Biology and Political Science, with a minor in
Sustainability Studies. She is an active leader in the UF Undergraduate American Medical Women’s Association and
creates educational public health content for social media.
Lavanya also participates in research related to arts in medicine and hand biomechanics. She hopes to incorporate
her interests in art, nutrition, and education into her future medical career. Lavanya expressed gratitude to
Shane Retina for supporting her education as she completes her undergraduate studies.
