Meet Dr. Castaños
We are proud to welcome Dr. Maria Castaños to our Shane Retina team as a medical retina specialist serving patients at our ophthalmology clinic on University Parkway in Sarasota.
Dr. Castaños completed her Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree at Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE) in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, where she graduated as valedictorian of her class. She went on to earn ECFMG certification and began an intensive pathway of research and clinical training in the United States.
Her journey included a retinal imaging research fellowship, an internal medicine internship, and a full ophthalmology residency at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai (NYEE), one of the most prestigious eye hospitals in the U.S. After residency, she completed a medical retina fellowship at NYEE, refining her skills in advanced retinal diagnostics and therapies.
During her training, Dr. Castaños gained extensive experience in the management of conditions such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, uveitis, and other complex retinal diseases. She has also been deeply involved in clinical research, contributing to numerous publications and presentations in retinal imaging, OCT angiography, glaucoma imaging, and innovative therapies for retinal disorders.
