Dr. Anita Shane's Advanced Retina Treatments
Today's retina care offers more ways to protect and preserve vision than ever before. Dr. Anita Shane pairs advanced technology with careful monitoring to recommend the right treatment at the right time for each patient.
Intravitreal Eye Injections
One of the most effective ways to treat retinal disease and help prevent vision loss. Dr. Shane uses eye injections for wet macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vein occlusion, performed in-office with comfort and safety as a priority.
Advanced Macular Degeneration Therapies
Care for macular degeneration keeps evolving. Options may include targeted injections, newer therapies for advanced dry AMD such as Syfovre or Izervay, or non-invasive treatments like Valeda light therapy.
Long-Acting Treatment Options
For some patients with wet macular degeneration, longer-lasting treatment can reduce the need for frequent injections. The Susvimo ocular implant delivers medication over time, helping maintain vision with fewer visits.
Laser & In-Office Retina Treatments
Laser therapy helps manage certain retinal conditions. Along with treating retinal tears and diabetic eye disease, select patients may be candidates for laser floater treatment, an in-office procedure that reduces bothersome floaters.
Advanced Retina Surgery
When surgery is needed, Dr. Shane is experienced in advanced procedures such as vitrectomy, retinal detachment repair, and macular surgery. Each is tailored to the patient and aimed at preserving and improving vision, often using small-incision techniques for a smoother recovery.
Advanced Retina Imaging & Diagnostics
Accurate diagnosis depends on careful imaging. Technologies such as OCT and specialized retinal imaging let Dr. Shane track disease progression, guide treatment decisions, and monitor how you respond to therapy over time, so your care stays on the right course.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dr. Anita Shane
What is the difference between an optometrist and an ophthalmologist?
An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor (MD) who can diagnose and treat eye disease and perform eye surgery, while an optometrist provides routine vision care such as eye exams and prescriptions for glasses but does not perform surgery.
Dr. Anita Shane is an ophthalmologist with additional fellowship training in diseases of the retina. She completed medical school, a residency in ophthalmology, and further specialty training to treat complex retinal conditions both medically and surgically.
Is a retina specialist an ophthalmologist?
Yes. A retina specialist is an ophthalmologist who has completed additional fellowship training focused on the retina and vitreous, the parts of the eye that capture and transmit what you see.
After becoming an ophthalmologist, Dr. Anita Shane completed a two-year vitreoretinal fellowship at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami. This advanced training prepares her to manage conditions that general eye doctors often refer out, including retinal detachment, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vein occlusion.
What conditions does Dr. Anita Shane treat?
Dr. Anita Shane treats the full range of medical and surgical retinal conditions. These include macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment and retinal tears, macular holes, macular pucker, retinal vein and artery occlusion, flashes and floaters, and dislocated intraocular lenses.

Do I need a referral to see Dr. Anita Shane?
In most cases you do not need a referral to schedule an appointment with Dr. Anita Shane. Many patients come to Venice Retina on their own after noticing a change in their vision, and others are referred by their optometrist or primary care doctor.
If you have vision insurance or a Medicare Advantage plan, it is worth checking whether your specific plan requires a referral before specialist visits. The team at Venice Retina can help you confirm this when you call.
What happens at my first visit with Dr. Anita Shane?
Your first visit with Dr. Anita Shane begins with a thorough evaluation of your eyes and your vision. A technician will take some initial measurements and images, and your eyes will usually be dilated so the retina can be examined closely.
Dr. Shane will then review the findings with you and explain what she sees in clear terms. She will discuss whether any treatment is needed and answer your questions before you leave. Patients often mention how much time she takes to make sure they understand their condition and their options.
Does Dr. Anita Shane perform surgery?
Yes. Dr. Anita Shane is a fellowship-trained vitreoretinal surgeon, which means she performs both in-office procedures and operating-room surgery for diseases of the retina.
